Maritess vs the Superfriends

Maritess vs the Superfriends

It's a hilarious cartoon made with the purpose of educating people on the plight of foreign workers. It deals with things like sexual harrassment and expired visas. It was shown during lecture a couple of weeks ago when we were taught how the internet was used as the medium to educate people about issues in a friendly manner. I was only reminded of it when Ros and Melvin started imitating Maritess during one of theatre rehearsals. Random, I know. Anyway, it was memorable and I thought it was a great way to introduce problems in a non-serious manner! So check it out for a good laugh if you have the time!

"I think Batman's gay. He's always hanging around with the little boy Robin!"

Have fun imitating Maritess!

I'll Give You Moar

Ah... yes. You guys have already voted for emo entries, so I'll give you MOAR! Okay, I'm kidding, but I am feeling kind of emo. The lights are turned off except for my table lamp and the screen of my laptop. My roomie's sleeping because he's sick, but he still went to school today. Hope he gets well soon. I'm feeling emo because I'm tired and hungry. After a long day's work, I guess it's natural to feel the way I do.

Rehearsing for theatre was damn fun though. Despite all the waiting, Ros and I did renditions of Gimme More no less than 500 times. It started from merely singing it, to dancing along to it, to doing dumb things with it, to imitating her VMAs performance. I don't need people to love her. I don't need people to buy her album. I just need people to acknowledge that Britney is Britney! And for that Fabian and Ahmad deserves a shoutout too! There was a make believe advertising agency called Spears Lohan during lecture and they got my attention and we all laughed at it together. Kind of like how, in JC, my classmates would turn around and ask me if I was high whenever the Chemistry lecturer said "Toxic".

Rehearsal today was good. I've more or less settled into the shoes of my psycho role. I've to scold my refletion and then collapse into peels of laughter. Twice. It's been frustrating for me but my groupmates have been extremely supportive and gave me a couple examples. I've ran through the scene a couple of times in my mind especially when I'm walking alone (which explains the weird stares that I've been getting when I look serious and then start smiling to myself). The lights and music... everything looks good and I'm really excited about the performance tomorrow. No matter how it goes I know I had fun doing it, and I'm glad to be part of a bunch of talented people. We were really havoc. As of now I still smell of Febreeze. Okay, so it was my fault because I sprayed Melvin when he came into the Wardrobe and then he tried pinning me and I sprayed Ros and it became a rather messy affair which ended with strange white gob staines on one of the shirts. I'll leave it to your imagination.

Anyway, I'll put the video of our final performance tomorrow if I manage to record it!

I'll also be doing the lights for two other groups tomorrow and yes, I'm freaking out. It's a scary thing, listening out and looking for cues. I know I volunteered but I hope I do a good job and not screw up anything. I've just doubled my chances of doing so! Haha... I'm really nervous because I felt I haven't practised enough with them!

Theatre is the only elective that I'll miss when it's all over. I'll have to go back to seriously facing books and mugging for the rest of the subjects.

I don't know if I'm good at acting but I'm certainly interested in taking on more projects as time goes!

I'm on my way to mastering the art of zi high, and I'm getting more and more keen in performing in front of an audience. Doing a presentation, however, is a different story. My group finally presented our shizzle for Speech and Argumentation and we were all ecstatic that it was over. Every week that we weren't called was another week that we had to prepare and feel stress and fret about being chosen. Three cheers for Amos, Jinyong and Joan! You guys rock and it was fab working with ya'll!

Ooh yeah and I'm super prone to losing stuff recently. I'm kinda sad after my file, my thumbdrive, and now I've left my pencilbox in the lecture theatre. I'm going to try to hunt for it though. Unlike the other two cases, I won't give up hope so easily. Rawr. I don't know what to blame my recent episodes of forgetfulness on...

01

+ Ahmad who took the photo. Just wanna say I couldn't possbily stay in school without you guys. Sorry for not going on the Thailand trip, but if there were something else in the future I'd definitely go. Let's weather the exams together first! Haha...

Dammit... I'm getting a headache. I'll look at Britney's VMAs performance just for a laugh, then I'll be ready to sleep.

Blogging

I've been blogging since 2001 on opendiary. I don't know if anyone heard of that site before. I guess things like xanga were rather popular back in the day. I switched to blogspot because it was more accessible, so that was sometime in 2005. I was writing about myself and treating it as a diary but at the same time trying my hand at writing stuff about entertainment. I had weekly music charts, music reviews and movie reviews. Yeah there was a lot more effort as compared to now! Part of the reason is because I've watched too many movies this year, and I really cannot be bothered to write about them the way I used to! Also the focus moved from entertainment to me, basically because I think everyone would rather get their daily entertainment bites from Pink Is The New Blog. So obviously I continue to do what I do best, which is to talk about me. In terms of music charts well, I've heard so many people tell me that's the part they skip when they read my blog!

I don't think I'm fantastic or anything, but over time I've learned what kind of topics people tend to respond to. I haven't deluded myself by thinking that no one's reading and I'm allowed to blog all my inner thoughts and no one would know or start flaming people I hate whenever I feel like it. Instead it's this funny realisation that you're writing for yourself as much as you're writing for an audience. I think by neglecting the fact that people actually do pop by is a sign of disrrespect. You don't consider what they want (to read).

Some people believe they can't balance being true to themselves and writing for an audience. I'm not "some people". So here's a chance for you to vote for what you want me to write. If I do end up being a journalist (which I doubt because I'm not up to it yet!) it'll be good practice writing things that actually interest people.

I've thought of actually writing proper stuff. Serious stuff. Intellectual. But it seems that I've never been good at writing those. My GP essays consist mostly of things that I can make examples of from thin air, rather than hardcore science and technology, crime and punishment type questions. In a sense I've always been writing "improper" stuff.

Now, Terence is a different story. His blog is amazing. It's intellectual and witty... all the things I'm not. In fact I feel like a complete bimbo blogger compared to him. His latest entry probably sums up the entire COM203 lecture that happened on Monday! He is also one of the few (3?) Singaporeans to ask MM Lee a question during the Ministerial Forum earlier this month.

I've known Terence since Sec 3. He's brilliant in his manipulation of the language to convey his very creative thoughts. In fact he and Taufiq would take turns to impress (and shock) the class time and again with their writing. I was good of course, but they... they were in a completely different league! Surprisingly, instead of being jealous (which was an emotion that was very familiar to my childish self at that time) I was actually in awe of their writing skills. It was also their presence that pushed me to write better narratives and although I ended up with an A2, I felt that the effort I've put in to reach their standard made me improve a lot.

CS is a small place and to have a classmate from way back being in the same school is... amazing. I'm proud to know him and I honestly think that he'll be making waves in whatever he chooses to specialise in, although I think it'll be Journalism!

In conclusion (the favourite phrase to wrap up impromptu speeches with), despite the impending exams, I'll still be blogging because it is something I enjoy doing, and it really gives me the kick to know that there are so many people who are entertained, whether they're just dropping by to peep at the photos or read whatever I have to say! Keep on rockin'!

Dnd Professional

The professional photos for Dnd just came in about a week or so ago. There weren't many fantastic photos so that was a tad disappointing, but here are some of the good ones.

The Switch

Yesterday I finally wrapped up filming for my senior's project! It was a rather tedious process but I must say that I really learnt a lot. I ran out of hotel lifts, argued with an Ah Beng at some alley in Joo Chiat, sulked in a Chevrolet and played golf! From total misses and stiff postures to something that actually looks... believable. I hope. I know "a great learning experience" was a reason to bluff me into helping Shuwan act, but yeah, I had the chance to put things that I learned from theatre to use as well. I think most of my acting was a bit sub-standard because I only thought of how I was going to translate my emotions to actions after they finished filming my scene, which is a bit slow of me, but heck, it was a good try! They seemed satisfied with it, so that's my consolation.

Other learning points included things like knowing what the hell white balance is, taking multiple shots of a single scene, the use of some technical equipment, getting permission for filming in all sorts of different places, the actors and a whole lot of other things to look out for during filming!

I'm damn excited about seeing the finished product!

Ooh, and I dressed up for the shoot (as I was supposed to act as some rich guy coming out from a party) so I felt kind of pageantly and was overtaken by the urge to pose a bit.

01

I'm still trying to make the yang guang nan hai look work. Although the absence of a tan is a problem...

In addition to that I came up with an idea for filming for introduction of the DnD committee. It seems that the best ideas come when you're daydreaming and travelling. Instead of forcing things out, the mind wanders and ideas naturally pop into your head. My experience in filming will definitely come in handy too! Yes, so I'm very excited about doing it after the freaking exams. If I could just get it over with! Argh!

HALLoween

I enjoyed Exam Supper/Halloween a lot. I regret not going to the previous social events, but it wasn't because I didn't want to, but I couldn't! Now I know what I've been missing out. I'm disgusted. No more tuition on weekdays. Blah.

The evening started rather early as the Social and Publications Comm had to prepare their stuff! I've got two star examples right in my front yard. Okay, that's a manner of speaking, there isn't a front yard in hall. I'm talking about Daniel and my neighbour Liqi!

01

I thought the spider was quite cool. I seriously should've kidnapped one of them back to put on my board! They went about their preparations until it was time for trick or treat and they sort of barged into my room, turned off the lights until they got close enough and then they switched the lights on again.

01

And I was assaulted by all the scary faces! It was actually kind of cool to see them all made up! I tagged along with a group of them to go trick or treat. Basically they went around to collect the Halloween cards, give out sweets and inform everyone of the exam supper. Not everyone was very friendly though so I think it's a tough job to be a Civ rep. Also, a lot of people went out for dinner so we missed out on interacting with our favourite people. Other than that though, it was all very interesting as I got to explore most of Block 60 that I haven't been before!

We also found out where Daniel's SP lived.

I sneaked into the function room to have a preview of the place. That's the best thing about being in publications, photographer and journo of the write-up (which will be online soon, check http://webx.ntu.edu.sg/hall12/ )! Yeah, I felt like I was getting an exclusive sneak...

01

Upon entering, I was greeted by two rows of candles, leading to “The Dream Catcher”. There was a corner decorated with webs and spiders cut out from construction paper. The tables all around were decorated with tealights as the centrepiece. After taking a closer look, there was mah-jong paper with spooky writing that appeared to be made in blood on the table. The attention paid to the little details served to bring the Halloween mood into the function hall.

I sat with JY, Juan, Pearlyn and Mei Si and her two schoolmates. There was a screening of The Maid, which I heard was Clarence's idea. Kristle is jumping up and down because she didn't manage to catch it. It happens to be the subject of one of our prof's papers that we were supposed to read! It's fantastic to be enjoying a movie and doing work at the same time!

01

My Hall Buddy Justin whom I only see during social events! Haha... He came in towards the back when the movie was close to the ending (Shaun too!) and kept asked what was going on! It's a movie that's hard to explain. I thought the first part was kind of filled with stuff for cheap thrills...

01

... and apparently that was enough to thrill the girls of James Bond! I applaud them for staying through the whole thing though! That's grand! The top left photo's of the people I was sitting with for dinner, which was pretty good! Top right's James Bond, arguably the biggest OG to show up together. And yes, that's the huddling. The Maid is effectively scary still.

01

Definitely one of my favourite decorations in the entire place! The banner with the pounding heart in the centre was good too, just that this one had a bit more punch to it and I think everyone took a photo with it. It's as special as... well, like the Merlion would be at SR!

01

After the movie we all came out for a breather and this huge group photo! Haha... There's like one person whom I cannot for the life of me identify, but it's definitely the first time I've seen 10 people stand in a row and be able to fit into a photo nicely! The person who achieved such a feat was none other than our Vice-Prez Victor...

01

... whom we took a photo with! Haha... Yes. It was really happening. We went on to take a barrage of photos. I think I should've taken more photos of the seniors though! For some reason, Yu Lian's face is everywhere, but it doesn't matter because she did look pretty with the star on her face! For the sake of identifying the people who don't appear that often on this blog - top right is Shaun (aka guy who brought mashed potatoes) and Ah Sun, and bottom left girl (which someone commented looked like Britney Spears BOMT vid) is Shirin, head of Social Comm.

01

And how could we miss out on Mr Popular! One more person with him and we would've completed a proper collage! Haha... I kinda like this set of pics. Very refreshing from my usual stand-there-and-smile! Bottom right are the girls of SC. I thought Elsa was stood out during the MC-ing. Yes, we know you wanted a commercial, you're scary and we should be sitting down!

I'm full of nonsense.

Anyway, there was a bit of partying going on after that. Alcohol was served, and music was blasted. The innovative people got this pole and it seems that all sorts of dance could be performed with a pole!

01

Once again I must applaud our VP for being so game and trying to hype everyone up! Ou xiang! Haha... Other than the pole dancing, there was also limbo...

01

... which got a lot of people involved, and that is always a good thing! It certainly ended on a high.

I personally felt that it was a success because as long as the people attended had a good time! So... I'm looking forward to the next social event!

But first - exams.

Cry me a river.

Snooze

I know I'm deprived of sleep when...

Gimme More is my alarm tone and I ignore it.
Or the fact that it is unable to bring me to a state of consciousness.
The sky is bright but it doesn't seem to be too bright to be sleeping.
My ringtone is also Gimme More and I thought it was my alarm.
With my eyes half-opened I search for my phone which was somewhere at my knees.
With surprise I see it's someone calling me instead of an alarm.
I answer.
I recognise the voice.
It's my tuition kid's mom.
I gave my best professional voice.
She asked if I was coming for tuition.
I said, "Yeah, I'll be coming at 10 o'clock."
She politely but firmly tells me that it's 10:30AM.
I reel in shock.
I bring the phone in front of my face to see the time just to make sure.
It's 10:30.
I'm apologetic and tell her that I'll be there in half an hour.
I laze in bed for another 10 mins before rushing out.

PS: Halloween post up tonight ie anytime before the sun rises.

Siting's BDay

After the shooting for Shuwan and her group's video (where I played golf, acted beng, and sulked a lot), both of us took a cab down to Siting's place on Sunday night for her birthday party! Her condo is really very cool and the food was great. I was starving when I got there because I didn't really have much of a lunch!

01

A nice photo of our seniors... I think a lot of people from Hall 12 turned up! It was really rather amazing! Probably about... 50 people I guess, or am I exaggerating? It was really too many to count.

01

The view was bloody good. It made me wish I had a place like that. And the pool looked really inviting. Too bad we didn't get a chance to throw anybody in the water. Damn. My OG peeps and I only played about a round of Zhong Ji Mi Ma before scrambling off to some nice air-conditioned place and telling lame jokes. After that we decided to go out again and took even more photos.

01

And this is me and my roomie. Haha...

01

And the Tintin peeps! Anyway, didn't manage to get any photos of Siting and the cake because they were in great demand! There were a whole lot of people crowding around and we all sang a super sped up versh of the birthday song. After that came all the photo taking. I don't have the photos because I'm in them, but yeah... the guys managed to get a photo with her after eating the delicious cake.

01

And after that we made our way back to hall. Nothing interesting happened, except if you consider our mini catch-a-cab competition just outside her condo!

Also, had a great run yesterday with Sandar and Daniel. I haven't ran so fast in a very very long time. It was pretty crazy. Daniel came back about a full 5 minutes earlier than me. I couldn't see his back after going past the garden place! It was damn tiring and my legs are still aching like mad! It's almost enough exercise for the entire week! And I really felt very fit (and thus my nick was "damn fit" this morning!) We were freaking hungry after that. Luckily enough the coolest guy in Hall 12 dropped by with some left over mashed potatoes. Wah... I didn't know cold mash potatoes could taste so good! Haha.. thanks man!
