Pic of the Week

When I went to Thailand in 2003 for OCIP, these were the guys in my clique, MNG. We had tonnes of fun, playing a lot of tai ti, creating lots of havoc and of course working hard together. We talked till the wee hours of the morning. In Bangkok, we were shopping together and all. Even after that it was fantastic to have them around in school. You guys supported me when I had to go on stage as well as all the good luck messages during exam times. It felt great to be surrounded by so much friendship. Life in NY would have been different without them.

This photo was taken at our 'new' school compound while we were choosing photos. Thanks to Jia Hui for being my very dependable buddy on the Thailand trip. Thank you Bing Xiang for being the lamest and funniest guy. Thank you Hong Sheng for being the leader and responsible guy who looked out for everybody. Thanks to Lionel, for being the person could connect to most. Learnt a lot of stuff from these guys. Although we aren't as close as were during the trip and we haven't met up and talked in a long while (and even if it did, it might not be the same), but I'll always remember you guys!

Brunei

This week was pretty boring. Really. I haven't got much to write about what happened except that I finally got involved in Exercise Dragon Warrior. I was supposed to be the 'bench-warmer' but I got activated all the same. I kind of agree with everyone who went through the exercise that it was a killer but I was happy I had a chance to be part of it. If people wanted to take it the wrong way, they might think, "Why the f--- am I so suay to be involved in it, and not be in the 'reserve' team. Having to go through all the shit is hell.". For me, it was the challenge and the thrill (okay it was terrible when I was doing it, but thinking back now) that made the entire week meaningful. I've been through the course since April this year, training and attending lectures just to carry out these drills. Even if it's just an exercise I felt that what I've been doing during the past months are actually meaningful because I get to put to use what I've learnt. Although I screwed up here and there (I didn't know how to connect the garden hose into the DWA but I did it in the end!) it was still a good experience.

Which brings me to the next point. 5 pioneers from each platoon are going to Brunei. It's going to be on a voluntary basis. Yesterday PS asked who wanted to go and I think that other than Chris and I, no one raised their hands. My heart was beating wildly when I raised mine. I didn't know if I made the right decision, because I heard that it's going to be a real tough time. It'll be field camp except that it's going to be in the jungles of Brunei. Absolutely insane. Usually when I contemplate about such issues, there'd be so many things holding me back. My insecurity about my capabilities, my endurance and whether or not my performance would be up to standard. Hell, I'm not an infantry guy and this has chiong sua written all over it. However I've thought about it over and over that what I actually want to do with my life is to do something I've never done before each day and experience as much as possible. Because that's what life's about. To brave challenges that don't often come my way.

Sometimes I've been a show-off. Overconfident. Other times I suppose I've no balls to try out things that I'm not 100% sure that I would succeed. But I know that whenever I put my mind into doing something, I've never failed (in my definition, failure does not mean absolute success). And now I know I really want to do this. I won't consider other factors that are out of my control. Of course it'd be great if the people I'm close to are going with me, but all the things that I can gain from the trip are to enrich myself.

So should I volunteer my ass out of my comfort zone and fly off to Brunei on a potentially physically and mentally torturous adventure?

Movie Marathon

We planned this outing for 1 month and 2 weeks almost, and we got to enjoy it yesterday. Finally!

I took 20 minutes to stuff the contact lenses into my eyes. I have no freaking idea why, but once they were in, it only took a single blink for them to end up at the bottom row of my eye lashes. I went to the VCD rental shop at Woodlands MRT station but I didn't manage to find any of the titles that we wanted to get. After searching through rows and rows of VCDs, I got a grand headache and decided to give up and take the bus to Zhenhui's house instead. On the bus, my left eye felt unbearably uncomfortable that I removed my contacts, flipped it around, and stuffed it back into my eye. It went rather well, except for the fact that a guy decided to plop down heavily on the seat beside me and almost caused me to drop the lens on the floor.

The ride was a short, 30 minutes. Hell, it'd be short if a) you had a Zen Micro to listen to all your favourite songs b) you're sleeping c) you're travelling from point to point within Singapore. For me, I had all three so it was a pretty enjoyable trip. I didn't alight at the stop I was supposed to until I saw Zhenhui walking towards it. Relisation struck me and I got off at the next bus stop, feeling a bit panicky. Anyway, we went up to his house first and woah, was it impressive. Spacious with beautiful furniture to match, I couldn't help but feel comfortable upon entering his home. And I had my jaws on the floor when I saw the humungous wide screen TV that we were going to have our movie marathon with. Wow.

We played a bit of racing on XBox before he started on his Korean rice. Shuming arrived shortly. Both of us hadn't exactly had lunch and so we were contemplating whether we should go out to eat. However, in the end, Shuming went to the kitchen and opened a pack of chips decisively. Problem solved. We started on our first movie starring Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect. The plot was very unique and I was quite impressed by Ashton's acting. The movie had me on my toes most of the time, and though Shuming and Zhenhui would testify that I tried to cover my eyes at some parts of the movie, I plead innocence! I merely went for a toilet break at one of the scarier parts. Oops.

The next movie we watched was a simple bimbotic affair starring Lindsay Lohan in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. I have to say it is the most boring Lindsay movie I ever had to sit through. The only highlight in the entire thing was that I got to hear her sing and she sounded as good as she was on her debut album, Speak, which I've been listening to, almost non-stop. Call me obsessed.

I don't care.

After that we decided we were hungry enough to go for dinner. Our initial plan was to order Pizza Hut, but we went to Compass Point instead. It just so happened (okay, maybe we weren't smart enough to realise it at that time) but the Pizza Hut was just overcrowded with people and there was a queue that stretched out from it. The other food places were pretty crowded too, so we decided to take a train to Pongol Plaza.

It was a rather tiny place and it took us barely 10 minutes to explore the entire place before settling on having Canadian Pizza. We ordered and asked for it to be delivered to Zhenhui's house. We went to NTUC and actually wanted to buy ice cream but in the end, we didn't. Boo.

We took quite a lot of photos while we were out and about. The three of us managed to get into this photo, which looked like a big success compared to our previous effort. I was pretty thirsty and drank Iced Mocha with Pearls from this Bubble Tea shop. It tasted pretty weird when Mocha's supposed to be a tad bitter but it was mixed with pearls drenched in honey. It was still good though.

We made our way back to Zhenhui's house and we almost thought the pizza would arrive before us. Luckily it didn't and we managed to welcome it with open arms.

The pizza was pretty good and we enjoyed ourselves eating and talking about a lot of stuff. Yeah, it was a truly satisfying bitching session. Loved it. Then we continued our movie marathon with the Keanu Reeves vehicle - Constantine. We were all watching it for the second time and believe me, it was as good as watching it for the first. I can't wait to watch it a third time even! It really is a great movie. However it was getting a bit late and I had to catch the last bus back to Woodlands, so we didn't finish watching it.

Overall it was a fantastic day. Simple, yet so enjoyable. Fab stuff!

Pic of the Week

I've been discussing with my friends and all when I can get a car. When I can even get a licence. I know everyone's getting theirs. I don't have the money to learn driving as of yet and neither will I get a car in the near future either. In fact, I believe I'll only get a car after I start working for a couple of years and that'll be about 25 or so? Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I was rich. Or at least well off enough. But I ain't. Bah.

So for now... I can only dream!

Rachel Stevens - I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)

Largely ignored despite the barage of stomping club singles she has released, including the likes of Some Girls, Sweet Dreams My LA Ex and Negotiate With Love, just to name a few, Rachel Stevens is relentlessly churning out the hits, with the lastest one being I Said Never Again (But Here We Are). I heard of its release last week only a couple of hours before Bert posted a note on my tagboard and calling it "pop song of the year!".

I've always been a huge fan of Rachel despite the fact that audience outside the UK do not get exposed to her songs, largely due to her doing well, but not good enough for her record company to promote her outside of the UK. Thus, Singapore listeners have not had the chance to hear the utter greatness of her brand of pop music. I believe she's destined for great things. After all, her first single Sweet Dreams My LA Ex was huge in the UK (written by Cathy Dennis, who also wrote Toxic), so it's almost certain that all it takes is another breakthrough to propel her to dizzying heights in the arena of Pop.

Listening to I Said Never Again (But Here We Are) leaves you gasping for more. The pace of this track is like bullet train. Non-stop. It might take a few listens to get into the groove of this track but her voice and the pounding baseline is sure to get your heart thumping along. Her music is all-danceable and catchy, essentially what pop is meant to be. Here's what Rachel has to say about her up-and-coming sohpomore album:

"I'm really proud of this album, ever since I started working in music it's been about releasing great pop tracks that everyone can dance and have fun to but this time I also wanted to express more of myself and give people a few surprises along the way. Although I've matured I still want to keep pop fun but a little naughtier!"

Here's Sweet Dreams My LA Ex (which was originally meant for Britney but she turned it down), and of course the current single, which is slated for release in the UK on my birthday, I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)! Enjoy!

Carnival @ Marina

Well, yesterday Van and I celebrated our 17th month together at Marina. I was quite indecisive about going, because although I did want to try something different, it'd be sweaty, humid and an uncomfortable outdoor outing. Haha! But in the end I couldn't come up with anything better to do, so we went to Marina.

Surprisingly I was 20 minutes early. Everyone knows that I'm prone to arriving late for meetings recently. I don't know why, but I'll try my best to be on time from now on. We walked around and the first place of interest was of course my CBRE defence place. At the Explosives defence tent, there were a few dogs. Van wanted to take a few photos with them. To my surprise, Theodore (who was on duty with Guo Fei and Jeffrey) came and asked me to wear the mask and have my photo taken with Van and the dog. It was kinda strange suggestion but I was game for it, and of course, a chance to show everyone how pro I am at slipping on the mask.

Seriously, I think the dog was a little freaked out by the mask. Or is it just me? Anyway, I jumped at the chance to take a photo with my mask on because there wouldn't be a chance to do that in the future I think. We aren't allowed to bring cameras and other such contraband items to camp. Sad. We walked around a bit more and there were a lot of armoured vehicles on display. We crossed the road and went over to the site where the Navy stuff were. However we hesitated and missed the last ticket to the last ferry that was going out to sea. Damn! A once-in-a-long-time-chance. We took a look at the stuff and then crossed over back to the main place.

We saw this row of Engineer icons and I was busy trying to find the one for 39SCE and it was right at the end. Protect and Preserve! I think the motto is quite cool really. It reminds me of our kulau boris thing which was the triple P - Protect, Preserve, Pioneers. Okay.

Van and I went to take a ride on one of the armoured vehicles and attempted to look for Zhi Wei. Apparently, that guy saw us long ago, but try as I could I couldn't spot him. At all. Despite knowing that he was driving #11. It was as if he was stalking me after that. Man! I saw a lot of NYJC people. Recognised them, but didn't know them. Most of them knew Van though. We then waited about 40 minutes for an adventure ride, which was hell cool. It was better than any amusement park ride that I ever took. I don't know the name of that vehicle, but it had no problem moving on uneven ground, through semi-swamp conditions and looked pretty intact when it banged into a tree. We got to take two rounds because... well, that's for me to know. That experience was the most satisfying, and made all the waiting worth it! It also gave Van the opportunity to feel how it was like to be wearing a helmet!

I went back to the CBRE booth to look for the guys to take a photo with them. I realised that I should've taken it with them earlier, because when I went back, the guys weren't there any more. Sgt Chun Lei... or was it Sgt Chang Qi... oops, I can't remember his name, but he was the platoon 4 Sgt and he was damn nice. When he saw me around he knew I was looking for Platoon Sgt, who was on duty as well. He pointed to me the direction that PS was and I had another chat with PS. He really is very funny and easy going outside camp. It was in that rare moment (for me) that I got the chance to have a go talk with him. Anyway, I told him I wanted to take a photo with the guys then he asked me to call them. After searching, I realised that I didn't have any of their numbers and so he lent me his phone to call them. The three of them were having toilet break and I felt quite bad to make them rush back. PS added that all I had to say was that he asked them back for a photo!

Now that's a pretty good photo moment yeah? Taken very nicely by Van (I think her photographic skills improved since playing around with my digicam), I did quite a bit of waiting till all of them were free. It wasn't busy being on duty. They had to sacrifice their weekend and on top of that help out at the display where people'd come and try the suits and request their assistance in phototaking. Another reason why I went down was because I felt it would be nice to put up a photo like this on the noticeboard too. So, we took another photo...

After that, we said our goodbyes and Van and I went to Suntec. It was really very enjoyble walking around there. Luckily we didn't go to Bugis in the end. We went to the BK at Millenia and had an enjoyable time just enjoying each others' presence.

Oh Van if you're reading this... Happy 17th Month!

Financial Woes

I guess everyone faces them. I've got 650 a month, which isn't a lot. Well, who ever feels that they've got enough money? I give about 200 bucks to my parents a month, or rather, they'd just take what they need. However, after last month's rather violent discussion, I've got my hands on the card and now all I have to do is to look out on what I'm spending on.

Okay, I must agree that I've been splurging a lot of money on movies. If I were to compile a list of movies I've watched during the past two months, I'd probably die in shock seeing the amount of money I've spent. Oh, and that goes for CDs too, but that's not a recent issue. Lately, I've been tempted to take the easy way out, so when people want to go out with me, we usually end up watching movies. I could focus on doing sports or other things to entertain myself. Entrance to the swimming pool costs less than 2 dollars but I've just been too lazy to drag myself there. I've never thought K Lunch was a waste of money because I get to eat there too so that's not exactly a problem. My girlfriend is very understanding of my situation and although I don't pay for her stuff when we go out, I try to make an effort to make it my treat on special occassions. I've wanted to keep a log on my expenditure for the longest time, but I end up starting from 0 again and again.

Today I stupidly took the cab and it was perhaps one of the things I regret most. It costs 20 bucks to get from my camp to Marina. I should've asked the uncle to let me alight at the nearest MRT station. That's super silly of me and I keep thinking of the CD that I could have bought if I didn't spend that 20 dollars. Well, it wasn't exactly my fault because I had just finished my orderly duty and I only had about 5 hours of sleep. That caused me to become lazy, lethargic and temporarily retarded. I couldn't be bothered to walk to the bus stop to take the bus to Woodlands and so I succumbed to temptation and took the bloody cab that arrived just outside my camp.

I don't know why but for some reason unknown to me, I've got the urge to try out rock climbing. It's a sudden, out-of-nowhere urge. Maybe it's the little bit of adrenaline. Maybe it's the need for physical activity. Maybe I secretly want to break a limb so I can get Att C for a couple of months and still get my 650 pay. But seriously, I feel like taking it up as a hobby. In the past 6 months, I sometimes wish I'd done something new and picked up a new skill or hobby during my book out time, but all I've done is plenty of splurging and indulging in passive entertainment. The kind where you sit there and wait to be entertained ie movies.

Did I mentioned that I also want to get a freaking tan? I'm getting too pale for my own good. I should just grab a book, a groundsheet, my boardshorts/swimming trunks, sunscreen and go down to the beach and slack. Hmmm, the cycling trip I had with Ben was tonnes of fun too, but it was a really sweat-it-out moment-and-exert-yourself moment. I don't mind doing it again though. But I can't exactly think of amazing cycling places.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if I should have a birthday party of sorts. Well, I haven't had one since.... I can't even remember the last time I had one. Now I'm not bothered by exams and the likes during the very cool month that is October, maybe I should take the initiative and do something and have a good time. I'll have to think about it. What if I have to spend a bomb? That'll not do.

And I still owe Mr Cheng $550 for last year's Myanmar trip. And to think my mom said that she'd help me save up to return Mr Cheng the money. Outrageous. The allowance money that I get go to things like the electricity and water bills, phone bills, my brother's tuition fees, my brother's 'O' level examination fees (if he gets L1R4 less than 20, I think I'd be happy for him already) and other miscellaneous things like groceries. Ew. However, I'll still try my best to make it all work out. When I don't try to work things out, I just spend every single cent that I have in my wallet just to get rid of the frustration.

And in case you're wondering why I didn't gave my usual goodbye entry last weekend, it's because its as if I've never been away. I've been back on Monday, and today, and I'll be back on Friday.

Oh, and a big thanks to Ming Boon for co-authoring with me the entry about Jay and Edison. One of the most successful entries to date! Haha! Watch this space for more!

Edison and Jay... so scandalous!

I'm online, having an innocent chat and suddenly my fellow Jay fan (well, she's a humungous Jay fan, I'm just a normal one), Ming Boon tells me - Edison and Jay are having a scandal!

*courtesy of MBies!

I'm big fan of both of them myself, and I've seen plenty of photos of them, so the first one I thought of, was this one:

Now, doesn't that look like a photo of two good buddies hanging out? How innocent can it be. True enough, they both have some stuff in common. They both do Pepsi commercials together and they've just finish promoting Initial D, which they both starred in. Innocent stuff. Well, then she sent me this photo:

My first reaction was: Woah! Edison is wearing such a cleavage baring shirt. Of course, that was besides the point. Ming Boon asked me to look at Jay's expression. And I did. Shockingly enough... doesn't it seem that Jay is looking LOVINGLY in Ed's direction? Scandalous! So I told her to send me more photos of them from that press conference. She names this the "pei ni qu kan liu xing yu" (lookin' at shootin stars) photo.

Well, I didn't believe it at first, but it was becoming more and more obvious. I asked Ming Boon who started it and she said it was probably Edison. I was like: What the hell! It should probably be Jay because Edison's the one who's good looking. Okay, maybe Edison wanted to lure Jay into writing songs for him. That's always probable! Meanwhile, she came up with a couple of scandalous theories...

Now, we shouldn't make accusations without proof... so here we have it!

Ming Boon told me that Ed's pose was rather ai mei. And I agree with that. Okay, so this photo is actually a combination of 4 seperate photos because I've seen a photo of all of them solo, just that this advert has decided to stick all of them together. But why Edison in between Jay and Jolin? I have no idea. Maybe he wants the best of both worlds or he bribed the Pepsi people to have the spot beside Jay. I told MB that they should just shoot a porn film. And MB said that'll probably be the only porn film she'll ever watch. See? It'll probably be a low-budget yet high earning film. Copyright here.

Well, the both of them look like really good friends, seriously.

Me and some of my best guy buddies are like that. Always chummy with each other. But not this close! MB said that it's like they're leaving poor Shawn Yue out of the picture on purpose. Hmmm. Also, notice it's always Edison who's making the move on Jay. I wonder...

Okay, now this is just outrageous. Can they get any closer? Gosh!

Still, I'm really only joking. Seriously! (The irony!) I hope I don't offend anybody with the stuff I put up. Especially not Edison or Jay! If this pisses them off if they ever read it I'll be full of regret. Honest! Don't sue me either. I'm a poor guy. If you want to, you could get your record company to send an email to take this thing down. I could be the biggest fan you ever lose! Both of ya! It's true! I've got Ed's first Chinese album Ed Is On, I've got his greatest hits compilation, Hits or Misses, in Cantonese even though I probably don't understand a freaking thing that's in there. Also, I got his other Cantonese album Please Steal This Album, which is a bloody fantastic hip hop album. I've been wanting to get his other chinese album and the latest canto album but they're at priced at 150% of other discs! As for Jay, I've got every CD and VCD since Fantasy. Come on! It's all in the name of good fun. And since both of them are young and dashing and girl magnets, they are 100% straight. Trust me on that... No, wait, this just came in.

Now let me take a quick peak at that photograph... *Gasp!*

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

It's quite terrible of me to name my entries after movies but still, first up on what happened yesterday.

I met up with Si Hua and Sequeena for a late breakfast at about 10AM. We sat at one corner of the Sun Plaza Mcs that we used to frequent when we were in secondary school. It brought back a lot of memories for us because we used to study there in the morning for the 'O' levels, but ended up chatting and experimenting on how many $2 sausage mcmuffins can be eaten per person before 11AM. Anyway, we got to see the many photographs that we took last week and they were rather interesting. I wonder if anyone is going to develope them. I know I will.

After that we went to shop around to buy some stuff to bring to Si Hua's sister's house. We bought 3 packets of tomyam, one bottle of Zappel. I think that was about it. It was a 15 minute walk to the house, and I must say it looked very pretty. Of course the first attraction was Si Hua's nephew, Kenzo, who's a month old. Cool name huh! I don't even know whether I spelt that correct. We were greeted by her very hospitable sister and we took our time to eat our cup noodles. Nana and I ended up playing Lego with Joel, Kenzo's older 4 year old brother. Actually it seemed more like Nana and I were the kids. It was quite fun to do something simple like building a house out of Lego. After that we took a few photographs of the house with Joel (waiting for Nana to post those pics up in her blog. Hurry up woman!) Oh, then Si Hua's parents came by when we were testing the Macadascar VCD. The three of us are kinda close so her parents do know us pretty well. Haha... We had a mini-eating session again, cooking another cup noodles and this durian puff which her dad bought. Yummy! I forgot to mention that I had the opportunity to taste the extremely sinful Seafood-flavoured potato chips. Gosh. They tasted good too!

Nana and I talked for a long while about a lot of stuff. It's amazing how we can talk about meaningful stuff (graduation, our future plans, studies) without going through a lot of small talk. We were so engrossed that I forgot to take the FIR CD in the end. Darn. I went straight to Far East to take a walk and I felt kind of weird because it's been a long time since I've been there! Gosh. It looks kind of different and after spending quite some time there, I got to see a lot of interesting stuff that I'll be spending money and time on, but that'll be for next time. Shan't give all my discoveries away.

Met Van rather late and by that time I had to get 2105's tix for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. While walking to PS, I saw Shuming, who didn't have the lucky chance of seeing me. She was with... arhm. Anyway, she called when I was buying the tickets. Oh, and 2 thumbs up for her hair. We were walking rather quickly in opposite directions so it did take some time for me to register that it was actually her. Looking good ya! When I was walking to this hawker place which I can't describe, Jia Hui saw me and he gave me a call. Damn! I wish I was the one who saw him instead. By the time he called I was rather far from his location already. And I was kind of surprised to hear from him. It's been 7 years since we've known each other. Wow.

Anyway, had a great dinner at the place with Van. She told me about her 2 weeks of very busy hostel life and all the fantastic people she got to know. For her it was almost like one big happy family. They had rag day, flag day etc. etc. and she looked like she's been enjoying herself lots. Good for her. We walked back just in time for the start of the movie!

Bring on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

I was enthralled from the very beginning to the very end. Despite having read the book a couple of times, this movie packs some very special things that are not included in the book and ups the surprise factor. Other than that, the movie follows the content of the book religiously. I haven't read the book in the past 7 years, yet I could remember some of the lines that were taken out word for word and added into the script. Very cool.

Not only has the movie able to stay true the book, it also brought the everything to life. When Roald Dahl could only cook up the images in his head, Tim Burton and his team have managed to translate all of that to awesome images on screen. That in itself is a huge achievement. Accompanied by the outrageously fantastic soundtrack, it is certainly one of the most memorable movies in recent times which makes use of music to enhance the entire mood of the movie. From the trucks moving out to deliver chocolates to giving melody to the poem that Roald Dahl wrote for the Oompa Loompas to sing, the people behind the scenes who created such strong musical backing for the movie deserved to be recognised.

For the uninitiated, the story is about Willy Wonka trying to find someone to hand over his factory to because he doesn't have any children. Thus, he cooks up a masterplan where he'd hide 5 Golden Tickets in ordinary chocolate bars and the kids who find it will have a chance to tour his factory. In the process, he'd be able to pick up the good kids from the bad kids and eventually find his predecessor. Simple plot, but there is not one second that you'll feel left out of the story, despite this essentially written for children. Johnny Depp's acting was magnificent, to say the least. The man brought the eccentric Willy Wonka to life and is in fact one of his most memorable roles to date. He was fab in Pirates of the Carribean too. You may think you know the book very well, but this movie will have your attention from beginning till end.

However, like a chocolate, it was only as good as the movie lasted. It isn't reflective of anything in any way. I give it 4/5 stars. Good stuff! I'll be catching another movie later. I hear you gasp. I'm sorry, I'm a poor bloke but still...

Wedding Crashers here I come!
