Convocation Speech

Congratulations to our valedictorian, Trinetta, for giving us one of the best speeches in NTU history. Double congratulations, for getting us in the news and giving us a graduation that was the most talked about, by netizens and the mainstream media. 2 days of coverage!

Most importantly, a big thank you, for giving us an awesome memory and a mad story for us to tell and to look back on for years to come.

You used to be just the girl hiding at the benches on the third floor. Now, you're nothing short of legendary.

Celebrate!

It was 8:10pm. I woke up to the the alarm of my handphone, those annoyingly cheery alarm tones and then, flashes of lightning. For the first time I was slightly afraid and I cowered a bit under my blanket but still everything lit up and I felt invaded and vulnerable. I checked my phone again and saw Colin's MMS - King King Jane ascended to #4 on the HMV Charts.

I stared out the open window at the sky defiantly, wistfully. More than six months of hard work ended yesterday with the Go Red For Women Picnic Day at Sengkang. It was unreal. When it ended, Amos' mentioned that it was as if it didn't happen. I agreed. We knew it happened, we were aware that it was carried out but it was so unreal. We didn't feel any different physically or mentally. We were still the same, but the momentous event happened.

There were many moments. The sponsors who were there saw engagement with their brands, which was fantastic because they did something interactive and integrated well with our event - Gardenia's huge bread mascot and Amore's Stretchfit demonstration. Kite-flying was successful in terms of number of attempts. It was heartening to see so many people running like crazy to get the kites off the ground despite the lack of wind. Can't complain when it didn't rain!

My moment happened when King Kong Jane took the stage. I had just seen them at Esplanade the night before and here they were at my event, playing a 30 minute set. It was special. I could finally show my friends why I liked King Kong Jane. It's not just because I am friends with Colin. It is all because I am friends with Colin! He mentioned that the event was not just organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation, but also 4 NTU students, his juniors. He told of how we slogged for the event and that he understood because he had done an FYP before. He said that he was invited by his "old friend Jason".

For four years I've been seeing King Kong Jane take the stage in NTU, in polys, at Suntec, at Raffles Place, at Timbre and just like their album which has risen to new heights, they were performing at new places, at the GRFW Picnic Day, at Sengkang!

QQ and I were there together when this took place and we were very moved. A bit wanna cry. After these many mentions of my name, my family stood and applauded loudly after their set. The crowd was appreciative too... I saw people around me, unfamiliar faces, happy and clapping.

Till now I still feel it, how touched I was at that moment. It was crazy. Colin has really went out of his way to do so much for the event, for my team. Amos, Ruiqi and I listened to a copy of the newly-bought and signed album in Amos' car on the way back home.

Thank you, the three of you... we brought our ideas to life.

Thank you, my family, for being there in full force.

Thank you to the people of SHF for all your hard work.

Thank you, the 6 of you, for being there and bringing friends.

Thank you to all the CS people who turned up to help at the event - we really couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you to the CS people who came down to support our event - it just wouldn't be the same without seeing all the familiar faces.

Thank you Stanley for being my programmer. But I minus some marks cos like me, you were also running around everywhere!

Thank you Weetz and Firus for being possibly the only friends outside CS to come down for me.

Thank you to all the sponsors who made the event possible and our goodie bag valuable.

Thank you to all the people who didn't come down but SMS-ed me and wished me luck.

Thank you, if I forgot to thank you, for your support.

Qiqi tweeted that "Happiness is surely only short-lived." But Weetz has taught me that there should be things to celebrate! Celebrate often! Celebrate success! Find things to celebrate, to be happy about.

And King Kong Jane's success has brought me such happiness and given me things to celebrate! Pages in the newspaper! Album on the charts! Celebratory gig at the Home Club on April 1st!

Celebrate that the event is done! Celebrate that FYP is about to end! Celebrate that my friends came down for me! Celebrate the fact that on the 20th of March, all the people who mattered came down - it was a celebration of relationships that we have with the people in our lives.

q01

From the four of us - Thank you all.

Gad Savvy

Gad-Savvy FYP by students of WKWSCI!

The 'Gad-Savvy' campaign aim to raise awareness about adverse effects of gadget over-dependency by providing useful tips and symptoms, as well us avenues to seek help for those at risk. This initiative kick-starts the level of awareness in Singapore in light of the rising trends of exponential increase in ownership and usage of electronic gadgets.

These guys manage to make the news today. Page 6 on ST, one page in front of the Finance Minister too!

Acting for them in the video was really fun. Possibly my last video ever and with people that I've constantly had the blessed opportunity to work with for the past 4 years.

Since it's the season of FYPs and it'll be good publicity any way, I will be spending the entire month blogging about FYPs. Possibly tomorrow, starting with my own!

FYP

One of the things that I learned on this FYP is that being right is not always the most important thing. Especially in the case of communication. More often than not the objective of communication is building relationships. But then again, not everyone sets out to build relationships. It's got to be a two-way thing and possibly, there's no need to be too overly-accomodating.

Being right is less important than doing the right thing.

I realise that I have a lot to learn. I know what I'm supposed to do when it comes to work. All the principles, the theory, the objectives. Sometimes they just are over my head. Sometimes it's much easier to talk about it and then when you start doing it... it's like wrestling a bunny with the strength of a 1000-pound giant.

I've learned a lot this semester and it has barely even started. It's really the toughest one yet.

Older and Wiser

The one thing that's fantastic about getting older, is becoming wiser.

I was with an old friend yesterday. He looked as young as I last saw him. I, on the other hand, have aged visibly. Thankfully I still don't look my age but if it accelerates I might actually look 30 by the time I become 30!

He directed me in a play (that was meant for public eyes) and made me jump through hoops there were challenging and unexpected. I did lots of things that were out of my comfort zone and looking back, it changed my life.

It was strange too, looking back and knowing that I was a rather different person back then. We like to believe that we make the best decisions at that moment but there really isn't any other way to find a better solution until you've made mistakes, or gone through a tough time. I would have done so many things differently. I would've been more confident of myself. I would love myself more. Hahaha... shit this sounds like a confession. I would learn how to take opinions in my stride. I would have tried harder.

And all that... I can't differentiate if I'm talking about my acting in the play or my life in general. They're all so blurry and kind of meshed together... my work and my life!

I've always told myself I will stop acting. This is the last time. That's the last time. But I've done a short clip for Nessie/Jacq/Mel's FYP. I got the opportunity to cameo as an undercover cop being a student beating someone up for Lyon/Pamy/Wenxu/Danielle's FYP. On Friday I will act in Christine/Zhenwei/MingXiu/YiLing's FYP for their campaign.

After 8 semesters in CS I think I can compile a showreel of my (crappy) acting. I quite like the idea! That I've done fun stuff and it's something to look back and have a good laugh about.

Kinda like life. Just go in there, get your hands dirty. You might be bad at it. But it could be fun.

Distraction

Don't think too highly of yourself. You are merely a distraction. I can remove you at will.

Even better, I can find other distractions.

Wear Black Day for Ceni-te

t took me awhile to get to sleep last night because I was so excited. So excited because I had never "organised" something that would turn out to be so huge and to be greeted by so much enthusiasm. This is despite being social secretary for CI Club for a year and having done dress-themed days!

It is undoubtedly the power of Prof Cenite. The black colour - so signature. I suggested it on facebook and then on Twitter and it got rather hot - a facebook event was set-up and friends started spreading the word.

I appreciate every single person who turned up in black. We made something awesome happen, something I didn't think would ever happen! The enthusiasm, energy and excitement in the air today was just electrifying. Everyone felt it and I was in... awe. Prof Cenite's view must've been very awesome. He said something along the lines of, "Everyone's looking surprisingly good today!"

Thank you Year 4s. For being so supportive and having fun. I never thought the day would come when we'd look so united, so spirited, so sexy. I have no words for this day, except that I hope that it gave everyone something memorable for our last lecture together.

What Would You Say

r01

I found this in the Nanyang Chronicle yesterday. It was an article about Power 98FM's School Invasion, where DJ Harry came to NTU to talk about "being a DJ".

I know I am bound to receive a bit of flak for what I said. With Qiao Ping beside me last Friday (she's an unlocks my crazier side), I was trying hard to give some quotable quotes. You don't want to be untruthful and you don't want to be too dramatic. At the same time you don't want to be that "useless interviewee who didn't give me shit to write".

Sounds a bit shameless, which is a bit trademark me... but then again, what would you say if someone asked you what qualities you thought you had to be a radio DJ?

Waste of Space

I need to grow up. One bad grade and I don't feel like attending lecture tomorrow morning. Suck it up Jason. Stop being lame. It's not over and you can try harder.

All of a sudden, it's raining. There's the sudden drop in temperature. And the loud roaring of the rain as it comes tumbling down from the heavens and the pitter-patter on the windows. It just makes me emo. It's comfortable to sleep yes, but I'm not in bed. I'm sitting here, thinking.

Sometimes I don't want to be this responsible, optimistic person. Although I try hard to be. I'm also dark and twisty and needy. Illogical and irresponsible, idiotic and indecisive. I'm a bit tired of this yang guang nan hai thing.

In fact, I've even lost my tan.

Maybe it's just the rain. The smell of it and the way it envelopes my existence from the outside. Feeds this moodiness.

I'll just sleep this away.

Assistance

"Hey, hi, is there anyone in the cubicle beside?"

"Er yeah."

"Is there like toilet paper there?"

"Well, erm, let me check. Yeah, there's a lot of toilet paper."

"Oh, can you help me get some?"

"Yup, sure no problem."

"Pass it from above?"

"Yeah, here you go."

"Thanks... anyway are you Leonard?"

"Er nope."

"Oh who are you then?"

"I'm Jason."

"Jason? Jason Quah?"

"Nope. I'm Jason. Yr 4."

"Oh."

A Little Nostalgic

I went back to NTU two days ago to submit some forms.

The bus was rumbling at its usual annoyingly slow pace into the compound. I hated the ride in. I haven't been back in six months. That hasn't changed.

When I alighted at Can A, I saw NIE. The place was where I took all my drama modules. I thought of all the fun I had. I wondered if I learned anything. Then I went to the wrong Office of Finance, I had to walk a hell of a long way to the Student Services Centre. I thought of the old Can A, before they had the air-conditioned one. I thought about getting lost in the North Spine. I climbed the steps that seemed to lead to the sky. I walked that long stretch of road. I saw shoes outside this room and there were people praying I think. I've never seen that before. I saw those pink flowers, the place where I took my OG to play games during FOC. I thought of how brilliant I was as an OGL. I thought about how happy moments were somewhat short-lived but how they stay with you forever. I went up to the building and submitted my forms. And came down. I walked down the steps leading to Hall 2. I remembered that I went there looking for a toilet. Then I realised that Hall 2 had toilets in their rooms rather than a common one. Like Hall 12. I walked some more, past the volleyball court. I saw myself playing there with my friends for my school. It was kind the corny flashback that you would see in movies. That's how I saw myself. I continued walking past Can 2. I thought of the porridge at Can 1.

And I arrived at the bus stop, waiting for 179 again.

I never remembered much about actually studying there. But the moments I had fun, those were the moments I felt for the most. I worked hard during the years I was there. And yes, the things I worked for were almost never academic. It was my home for so long, especially the 2 years that I stayed in hall. I never left, even for summer holidays. I relished having my own place. When I no longer stayed I had a new awesome group of friends who'd have Laksa Thursdays with me. The jokes and laughter and comfort of familiar company was what I felt when I walked through the school.

I have one more year and it will possibly never beat the years where I was really involved in non-academic activities. But it's one more year to spend in school as a student. After that, there'll be no turning back.

Travelling the World

My cousin is getting married in June and I'm the groomsman! Which is kinda like the sidekick of the best man. He got me a suit from G2000 and I am proud of how I look in it. The theme is lavender. It's a colour that I don't usually don but I can see myself in it more often. The most exciting part is that there're two weddings - one in Singapore and one in Indonesia! It'll be my first time to Jakarta and I'm thinking of an extended stay there just so I can explore the city. I'm really looking forward to this welcomed break - yes, I think I will not be getting a part-time job to replace internship. I've enough tuition to keep me busy for the rest of the year although I don't mind taking on one or two more, just for the hell of it.

On a completely unrelated note, congratulations to Cameron who won a pair of Reebok shoes. Also, this is a call for everyone who reads this blog to visit Make.Believe. (I cannot believe that I am promoting for a friend and for my former employer.) Vote for Amos and help him fulfill his dream of travelling the world and for Pamy to take her pre-honeymoon honeymoon! If that is not appealing enough to you, I will... think of something extreme to do if Amos wins this shit. Suggestions are welcomed.

r01

Because YOU helped to get him there and it's a big deal I am willing to do this shit. So get your ass in there, do him a favour, do me a favour and VOTE FOR AMOS.

It will take you a minute at most and you stand a chance to Go to 2010 World Cup FIFA Final, be the Flag Bearer Honour or if you're not that huge a soccer fan like me, get a chance to win a Sony Dream Set! And I say this not because I am whoring Sony, but Sony's product design is the best.

Aiyah just go in and vote lah.

Semester 5

Truth be told, this has been an awesome semester. I know there's probably been a lot of talk that it's the worst, but it's just probably because we like to complain.

Well other than the PI shit. That was total fail.

I've been pretty slack with my electives. Neither of them were inspiring. My core modules, however, were fantastic. For COM 401 I was part of a visionary project. The COM 432 was by far the best execution for a pitch. The module that taught me the most was COM 431. I haven't even finished learning all the useful stuff! The one that I'm by far the proudest of is COM 424, Writing for TV and Cinema. I've handed in the second draft and there're no exams for the module! It's done! I've got a good mind to post the silly script up here but we'll see about that!

In terms of parties, celebrations, adventures and friendships, well, this semester has pretty much everything. Once again I've squeezed as much as I could do into the little time that was available. Maybe what's different is that I'm having so much fun because of the people around me whom I enjoy doing work and living life with. You know you are.

I think I've also had one of the busiest semesters in terms of tuition kids. 4 PSLE, 1 Sec 2 and another Sec 3. My schedule was hectic and at times it was painful and even more painful for the kids because as awesome as I am as a teacher, my fuse is short when school work stresses me out. But I'm glad they understand. My more-than-average niceness made up for it.

As it comes to an end and we all hide at our own corners to prepare for exams after this last week of deadlines are over, I'm glad to not have to go to school and be able to plan my own timetable and do the stuff I like. The pace has been rather fast. Time to slow things down, be productive in mugging and at the same time, enjoy the simple things in life.

Like the jog that I went for this morning.

Awesome.

Bang Bang Boom

Of course I'm upset that I did not get the internship with the company that I want. I was really mad that the other company didn't grant me an interview. I was happy this one did, but well, I didn't get it. About a thousand questions ran through my mind. Did I say something wrong? Did I not sound confident enough? I enjoyed the interview, but there was surely something I could improve on since I didn't get the job in the end.

But I'm happy that Mel got it. If it were just any other person, or someone that I thought was unworthy, I would probably hate that person for life. I just have to accept it and move on to Phase 2, whereby students choose 6 companies and the computer system slots them randomly to each vacancy that is available.

I am very angry at CAO though. They are doing a really bad job. The lady in charge of our school is on leave at this period of time, where companies are supposed to confirm the students they have selected with the school. CAO feels that it is best that the companies speak through them.

Now I know why. When I called up the company and they had to tell me very nicely that I was on the reserve list and I was not chosen, it was somewhat weird and awkward. They knew that they had to go through the school but I'm so glad that they told me the news. I hate the waiting. The deadline for confirmation of internship was supposed to be yesterday. I waited and waited and downloaded the PI notices about 20 times in the past 2 days, only to be disappointed that it was not updated.

Now I don't have to download it any more. I can concentrate on getting rid of this semester.

Christine's Birthday Party

Saturday was Christine's birthday celebration... It was a lot of fun because -

1) There was mahjong
2) Crazy people playing wii are entertaining
3) I won a lucky draw prize (packet of peanuts!)
4) We were all as dumb as we usually are

I think the theme was rather difficult for the guys. We ended up dressing like nonsense! Hahaha... but it still made it great for photo op. Stanley deserved the best-dressed because as LRQ said, he looks like those kena fucked my MILF kind before being... erm... yeah.

I find it really entertaining that a huge group of us can gather to have fun, play weird card games that I have never heard of, play with dogs... etc. CS is small but we hang out in our cliques. It was fun to chill out with everyone else too.

Okay. For nonsense, scroll.
