Bangkok Day 01

Woke up to a fantastic morning at Terence's house and it kicked off the beginning of 5 days where the 4 of us would be stuck with each other, sharing the toilet, commenting on each others' dressing, doing our hair and indulging in mindless chatter.

Okay, that does sound a little wrong. Anyway, it's fantastic to wake up to a breakfast of cheese cake and sandwiches made by Terence's mom. His parents' were great and gave us a lot of assistance, from taking care of our stomachs to giving us advice and also a ride to the airport! Amazing.

Sern Hong's parents also came along to give him a farewell and it was kind of exciting to be going off on a flight without any adults following. Not that we weren't old enough! With a collective age of 83, I think we could take care of ourselves! Anyway, made a few last minute calls and updated my blog from the airport too. It was kind of cool!

The airport is a great place for kids to play around with. And also for people who have yet to grow up! Haha! We enjoyed shopping and looking around at the things that we could possibly buy upon coming back to Singapore. Also, there were plenty of things to keep us preoccupied while waiting for the plane to arrive. There was this mini-playground area near the Mcdonald's Cafe. In addition to that was a fab view of the planes.

We boarded the plane after a lot of waiting! There probably wasn't a need to rush into the plane although there was free seating! There were more than enough seats for all of us, and we managed to secure the ones by the window. The view was fantastic in the afternoon. However the aeroplane trip turned out to be quite boring. Didn't enjoy much of the scenery as I was suffering from a headache. I forced myself to fall asleep for some time before waking up to stone. I just can't go to sleep like that. *snaps fingers* Also experienced a bit of discomfort in the stomach. Hmm, I'm not one to get air sick though!

Upon landing, we were in a rush to reach our hotel and forgot to take a map! We managed to get one a couple of days later from the hotel itself! Anyway, we took a taxi from the airport which costs an extra 50 baht. The taxi driver didn't seem to know where our hotel - Samran Place Hotel - was located. He was on the highway and stopped at the side of the road to call up someone for directions!

For most people, it might be a form of unprofessionalism. For me, however, I take it as the way they do things. I suppose we shouldn't be quick to judge but rather take it as their way of doing things. The traffic was insane, with motorcycles weaving in and out like nobody's business.

Another thing that was present along the roads, that were noticeably missing in Singapore were billboards. They provided much needed colour and spice to the scenery. We travelled mostly on grey concrete structures and sometimes passing very shabby living quarters under the highway.

We were faced with the ultimate disaster when we were unsucessful in checking into the room that was meant for 2. The lobby was just too small for us to do any sneaking around! Well, we cleared the entire mess up by paying extra money, and that really broke our hearts, to have a hole in our wallets! When we arrived at the room, it was as if someone had just trashed it! To add insult to injury, there was the smell of lingering smoke from the previous occupants. We were "invited" to go back downstairs to take a seat as they whipped the room back into shape. It took quite some time and our morale wasn't exactly boosted! Sern Hong and I went out to take a walk. Half of the shops weren't even opened! However we found a place to maybe satisfy our night time supper cravings - A&W. The restaurant's extinct in SG already!

When we finally got into our room, it looked like it was worth the money and the wait! It was big and spacious enough for the four of us. The furnishings were a bit of a let down but it wasn't something worth complaining about - especially since I had my own bed. We settled in before taking a tuk-tuk to MBK!

MBK is the giant of all shopping centres. It's impossible to see from one end of it to the other, and even harder to visualise the layout of the place. Being a second-timer to Bangkok made it a little easier. We had our meal at the foodcourt. I had the most delicious Pad Thai for a mere 35 baht and a medium Pepsi for 20 baht. Oh, and the guy at the drinks stall was quite nice and polite in the way he handed me the money that I'd given by accident.

After that we went about to do our shopping. There were just too many things to look at that I was at a lost as to where to start. Some of the prices were pretty undreasonalbe by Thailand standards while others were decently affordable. We went to take a look at the soccer jerseys but they ran out of L size. WC fever. It was going to be challening to find jerseys for me and the rest of the people who asked me to buy! Daniel and I went to get some sunglasses and the lady extorted us. We took a long time - virtually trying out all of the 60 or so that were on disply - when I finally picked out 2 that I liked. It would've cost us 600 baht but we bargained till 500 baht. I know that isn't much of a bargain.

Initially I thought it was a steal - until we bought a whole lot of groceris at Top for a mere 443 baht. We got a lot of drinks and junk food, from chocolate bars, Pocky to potato chips - and we realised that the lady would've enough money to buy tonnes of stuff to last her quite some time!

We took a walk along the streets just to look for a jersey shop but ended up empty handed. We took a tuk-tuk back to our hotel. (Does that rhyme?)

I realised that my socks stink badly and I want a pair of slippers and some branded underwear. Before and after the shower (bath actually), I did a bit of cam-whoring before going to sleep. There was Charlie's Angels on TV but I went to sleep instead.

The temp bed's quite comfy actually! Muahaha!
